Taxi in El Born

You have just left a restaurant near Santa Maria del Mar, it is late, and you look for a rank. A taxi in El Born needs a little planning, because the neighbourhood has very few official ranks. In the city council's taxi stops data set on Open Data BCN, the area of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera has four: one at Via Laietana, 36 and three registered at Avinguda del Marquès de l'Argentera, 6. That is two addresses, and neither is an inner street of El Born.

So walk to one of those two roads, or agree a meeting point with the driver when you book. A car is unlikely to be waiting on the corner of your street.

• Via Laietana, 36: a single rank at this address. It is the only one in the area that is not on Avinguda del Marquès de l'Argentera.
• Avinguda del Marquès de l'Argentera, 6: three ranks registered at the same address. That is what the open data shows; we cannot say how many cars fit at each.

The data set is licensed CC BY 4.0 and updated weekly. It tells us where the ranks are, not how busy they get.

One common reason to be in the area is El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria, at Plaça Comercial, 12. The council lists it as open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, 10 am to 8 pm, from March to October. From November to February it is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm. If you finish a visit with children or bags, order the car ten minutes before you leave rather than starting to look when you get outside.

How much is a taxi from El Born?

These figures are our own calculation with the AMB urban tariff, from the middle of the neighbourhood. They exclude waiting, traffic delays and tips, and they are not any company's price.

According to the AMB tariff page, the flag fall is €2.80, tariff T-1 (weekdays, 8 am to 8 pm) is €1.35 per km, and T-2 (weekday evenings and nights, Saturdays and public holidays) is €1.66 per km. Getting a taxi in El Born at night and at weekends

The hard moment is usually the end of an evening out. We have no data on rank occupancy, so we cannot tell you when cars run out, only that there are few ranks. Evenings, nights and Saturdays are on tariff T-2, at €1.66 per km, which is why the ride to Sants goes from about €10 to about €12.

A few habits help:

1. Order the car when you ask for the bill, not when you step outside.
2. Give a meeting point on Via Laietana or Avinguda del Marquès de l'Argentera, because those are the roads with official ranks.

From El Born to Sants station or the cruise port

Sants is 5.7 km from the middle of El Born, a little further than from the Gothic Quarter at 4.4 km. For the cruise terminals, the 3.5 km run to the Moll Adossat costs about €12 because of the €4.60 dock supplement. Taxi in El Born with luggage, children or a wheelchair

With a pushchair, several bags or a wheelchair, the meeting point matters more than the rank. Give the driver Via Laietana or Avinguda del Marquès de l'Argentera, since those are the addresses in the official data. For wheelchair users, several companies in our list say on their websites that they have adapted taxis, including Xact Transfer, Taxi Ride Barcelona, Taxi Aeropuerto and Taxi Sobre Rodes.
