Taxi in the Gothic Quarter

You are staying in the old town with two suitcases and the airport car is due. A taxi in the Gothic Quarter works differently from one in a wide modern street, so the useful question is where you can actually meet a car. The city council publishes 8 taxi ranks with an address in the quarter, in its Open Data BCN taxi stops data set (licence CC BY 4.0, updated weekly). Every one of them is on a main street or square at the edge of the quarter:

• La Rambla: four registered, at numbers 44 (two entries at the same address), 72 and 134.
• Plaça de Catalunya: two, at numbers 17 and 23.
• Plaça del Duc de Medinaceli: one, at number 5.
• Coast ring road (Ronda Litoral): one, at number 108.

In practice, do not count on a car collecting you at your door. Walk to La Rambla or Plaça de Catalunya, or agree a meeting point the car can reach when you book.

Taxi rank in the Gothic Quarter

Here is the same list as a quick choice. Check the exact position on a map before you set off, because La Rambla is long.

The data does not show how many cars wait at each rank or at what hour. For orientation, the cathedral stands on Pla de la Seu in the heart of the quarter. There is no registered rank at that address, so plan to walk from La Rambla.

How much is a taxi from the Gothic Quarter?

These are our own calculations with the AMB urban tariff, from the middle of the quarter. They leave out waiting time, traffic delays and tips, and they are not any company's price.

The AMB sets a €2.80 flag fall, €1.35 per km on tariff T-1 (weekdays, 8 am to 8 pm) and €1.66 per km on T-2 (evenings, nights, Saturdays and public holidays), plus €4.60 when the airport or the Moll Adossat dock is the start or the end. Is it cheaper to book a taxi in advance?

Not on the meter. The tariff is the same whether you go to a rank or call. What changes is the floor: the AMB says a service arranged by phone or app starts from €8, so a short ride booked that way can cost more than the meter alone. You book for certainty, not for a discount. Book when:

1. You have an early flight. Meeting the driver at a fixed point saves you dragging bags through busy streets.
2. You are going to the cruise terminal. The €4.60 dock supplement is already in the table.
3. There are five or more of you. The AMB adds €4.60 for 5 to 8 passengers, so say so when you book and see our page on large taxis.
4. You travel with a pet or need a wheelchair-adapted car. Taxi Ride Barcelona says on its website that it accepts pets and mentions an adapted taxi. Confirm by phone, and see our page on pet-friendly taxis.

What to tell the company when you order a taxi in the Gothic Quarter

Because a car cannot always reach your door, tell the company three things at the start: where you are, how many people and bags you have, and when you have to be at your destination. They can then offer a realistic pick-up point, usually on La Rambla, at Plaça de Catalunya or at Plaça del Duc de Medinaceli. Also ask how you pay: only one company in the list mentions card payment on its website, so do not assume it.
