Taxi in Barceloneta

You are on the beach, the sun has gone and you want to be at Sants in half an hour with a suitcase. A taxi in Barceloneta is easy for that trip, because the neighbourhood sits on the waterfront with ranks along its edges. There are two ways to do it. You can walk to a rank and take the first free car, paying by meter. Or you can book a car for a set time, which makes sense for a flight, a train or a group.

Booking by phone or app has a floor price. The AMB, the Barcelona metropolitan area authority that sets the urban taxi fare, says a service arranged by phone or app starts from €8, according to its taxi tariff page. Taxi rank in Barceloneta

The city council publishes 10 taxi ranks with a street address inside the neighbourhood, in its open data set "Taxi Stops in the City of Barcelona" on Open Data BCN, which is licensed CC BY 4.0 and updated weekly. We have grouped them by area:

• Seafront: two on Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta (numbers 23 and 39, named after Oriol Bohigas) and one on Passeig Mare Nostrum, 13.
• Carrer de la Marina and Ramon Trias Fargas: two on Carrer de la Marina (13 and 19) and one on Carrer Ramon Trias Fargas, 1.
• Passeig de Joan de Borbó: two, at numbers 11 and 76.
• Carrer Pinzón and Carrer Doctor Aiguader: one at Pinzón, 1 and one at Doctor Aiguader, 88.

The data tells us where the ranks are, not how many cars wait at each one or at what hour. So before you walk with luggage, look at a map and pick the closest rank. If the first one is empty, a call or an app request is the quicker fix.

How much is a taxi from Barceloneta?

These figures are our own calculation with the AMB urban tariff, from the middle of the neighbourhood. They leave out waiting time, traffic delays and tips, and they are not any company's price.

The AMB sets a €2.80 flag fall, then €1.35 per km on tariff T-1 (weekdays, 8 am to 8 pm) and €1.66 per km on T-2 (weekday evenings and nights, Saturdays and public holidays). It adds €4.60 when the airport or the Moll Adossat dock is the start or the end of the trip, and the same amount for 5 to 8 passengers. Taxi from Barceloneta to the cruise port

The Moll Adossat is only 3.6 km away, but it costs more per kilometre than a normal city ride because of the €4.60 dock supplement. That is why the trip comes to about €12 rather than €8. If you are a family of five or more, the AMB also adds €4.60 for 5 to 8 passengers, so ask for a seven-seat car when you book (see our page on large taxis in Barcelona). What is around the ranks

A rank is easier to choose if you know what is next to it. The Mercat de la Barceloneta, on Plaça del Poeta Boscà, began operating in 1887 and was remodelled between 2005 and 2007. The council lists it as open from Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 3 pm. If you are carrying shopping from there, it is easier to ask for a car at the door than to carry bags to the promenade.

On the seafront, the Passeig Marítim ranks are the closest if you are coming off the beach or leaving a terrace. We have no data on how busy any rank gets, so if you see a long queue in the evening, check the map for the next one along or book.

When should you book a taxi in Barceloneta?

A rank is fine for a short ride with no deadline. Book ahead in these cases:

1. An early flight. The ride to the airport takes about 26 minutes without traffic, and roadworks or congestion can lengthen it.
2. A long-distance train from Sants. The ride is about 12 minutes without traffic, but leave time to reach the platform.
3. Embarkation day. Many passengers want a car at the same time in the morning.
4. A big group or heavy luggage. You need a vehicle for 5 to 8 people.
