That change is what surprises people who compare with a city ride. The €1.35 per km of the urban fare does not apply. A lower price per km does, but you are billed for roughly double the distance.

Between €166 and €180, depending on the time. Girona city council publishes the 2026 intercity tariff: €0.82 per km on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00 and €0.89 per km at night, at weekends and on holidays.

How is the Barcelona to Girona taxi fare calculated as a closed circuit?

The intercity meter counts the kilometres back to the starting point by the shortest route unless you agree otherwise. This comes from Order TES/226/2018, which the STAC sets out on its website, and it means you hire the whole car for the job.

So even a one-way trip includes the driver's return. If you want a different arrangement, agree it before you leave.

Is a taxi better than the train or bus?

Before you accept a price, remember that a long intercity trip is quoted for the car and the job, not per head. Two people paying separately will see a very different figure from four people splitting one invoice, so decide how many travel before you compare quotes.
