Taxi from Barcelona to Tarragona
You have a visit in Tarragona in the morning, or a ship in its port, and you leave Barcelona with time to spare. A taxi from Barcelona to Tarragona is a long ride, and the best way to avoid surprises is to understand how each kilometre is counted. It is an intercity service, so the AMB points to the Generalitat's tariffs rather than its own urban fare.

The last row is a plain division of the estimate, not a company price. It shows why a shared taxi comes close to the cost of public transport for several people. Tolls and waiting are not included.
Can you agree another price or route?
Yes. The STAC states that the closed-circuit route back to the starting point applies unless both sides expressly agree otherwise, and that the user pays any toll, including the driver's return. That leaves room for a fixed price or a different arrangement, such as the taxi continuing to another nearby point.
Fixed prices often do not match the meter estimate. Ask for them in writing, with a list of what is included.
What is not included in the fare?
- Tolls: paid by the passenger, including the driver's way back.
- Waiting: €22.47 an hour by day and €24.32 at night in the same tariff.
- Groups: €4.60 for more than four passengers.
- Airport pick-up: a €4.60 supplement. Our figure starts in Barcelona city.
What about a day trip with waiting time?
If you plan to see the city and return in the same taxi, waiting matters. Four hours of waiting by day is about €90 on top of the round-trip fare (4 x €22.47). Two separate rides, one out and one back, can cost differently depending on your times.
The cleanest solution is a written quote with waiting included, giving your times out and back. For a late return, 26 of the 30 services say on their websites that they run 24 hours.
How long does it take, and taxi or train?
About 75 minutes without traffic. The approaches to Barcelona and summer or holiday weekends can add a lot, so for a fixed appointment leave at least half an hour earlier.
For one person with little luggage the train is usually cheaper; check times and fares on Renfe. The taxi wins with groups, bags, children or awkward hours. For six to eight travellers, see large taxi Barcelona.
If you are arriving by ship in Barcelona, start from Barcelona Airport to the cruise port; from the airport, see Barcelona airport taxi; if you are going on to the coast, compare Barcelona to Salou by taxi.
What to ask before you confirm
Five questions avoid trouble at payment time:
- Is the amount a meter estimate or a fixed price, and what exactly does it include?
- Are tolls included or charged separately?
- Is there waiting at the destination and what does an hour cost?
- How many people and bags fit? A standard taxi seats four; more people need a larger vehicle and the €4.60 supplement.
- Can I pay by card? Only 12 of the 30 services mention it on their websites, so confirm before you travel.
14 of the services mention wheelchair-adapted taxis on their websites if you need one.
